The Red Dot Design Museum Singapore presents the latest trends in the international design scene with a collection of more than 1,000 prize-winning works. All of the products, communication designs and concepts on display were tested, discussed and evaluated by a panel of international experts in one of the world’s largest and most renowned design competitions – the Red Dot Award. Only the best of all entries receive the coveted Red Dot quality seal – and thus their deserved place in the Red Dot Design Museum.
In November 2005, it was opened as the first contemporary design museum in Singapore and in Asia. It is located in the iconic Red Dot Traffic building, a former Police Headquarter built during Singapore’s pre-independence British colonial era. Brushed in a bright coat of red, the house is a refreshing dose of creativity in the centre of Singapore’s business district. At the first step into the building, the visitor is entering a whole different world from the bustling commercial skyscrapers outside.
As a hot-spot of the design scene, the exhibition gives visitors an understanding of cultural or country-specific characteristics, informs them about current trends and established brand-name products and demonstrates how design has changed over the years. By focusing on 2 different topics and introducing the works of well-known designers as well as of young talents, the Red Dot Design Museum Singapore continuously offers new and exciting insights into the fascinating world of design.
In addition, one Friday night of each month, the museum transforms into a creative playground during MAAD [Market of Artists and Designers]. That’s when over 60 stalls of artists, designers and local musicians gather to showcase their original creations to the public crowd of some 2,500.
