Inside US University Admissions with Collegewise

Join Collegewise for a deep and nuanced dive into the current state of university admissions in the US. What are U.S. universities looking for in applicants? And more importantly, how can students and parents use this information to make better decisions and devise stronger strategies as they consider applying to American universities? At this event, Arun Ponnusamy, Chief Academic Officer, will explain the role character and engagement play in admissions for selective universities. He’ll offer concrete advice on navigating and excelling in the U.S. college application process. Next, Arun will be joined by Hani Rahman, Director of Counseling, and Leslie Tam, Senior University Counselor, in a full mock admissions panel. By reviewing multiple applications, they will give you an inside peak into how university admission offices review applications, from demographics, to grades, to activities and essays. We’ll wrap up with an audience Q&A for parents and students to ask any questions they’ve been having about the university admissions process. Coffee, tea and light snacks will be served. SCHEDULE OF EVENTS: Character Counts! A Look at Emotional Intelligence in University Admissions Arun Ponnusamy • 10-10:45 When applying to university, many students understand the importance of course rigor as well as strong grades and test scores. However, in the United States, another factor is increasingly important as admissions committees decide who is admitted: emotional intelligence (a.k.a. EQ). In this presentation, Arun will explain how EQ is different from academic factors and why even the most selective of American universities place high value on character, ethical behaviour, and engagement with others. He’ll discuss the influence of Harvard’s Making Caring Common Project as well as Stanford’s Challenge Success initiative. Finally, Arun will share practical and actionable advice and best practices for students who are seeking to better understand themselves and portray the most authentic version of themselves in application essays and interviews. Admissions Committee/Roundtable Arun Ponnusamy, Hani Rahman, and Leslie Tam • 11:00-12:00 What happens after you submit your application? How do the decisions actually get made? We’ll have former admission officers of University of Chicago, Caltech, the University of California system, and Yale-NUS College teach you how applications will be viewed in the context of an admissions office, complete with sample applications. We’ll go over specifics like how academics and grades are reviewed, what is looked at when assessing a student’s extracurriculars, and exactly how much impact the essay and letters of recommendation really have. Ask Us Anything! Arun Ponnusamy, Hani Rahman, and Leslie Tam • 12:15-12:30 SAT or ACT? What exactly is a liberal arts college? Do internships really matter? Do you wake up in the middle of the night thinking about your child’s university admissions journey? Are you worried, stressed, or experiencing some entirely new combination of feelings you can’t quite articulate? Well, you’re not alone. If you’d like a safe place to ask questions, want to hear that there is light at the end of the tunnel, or want to hear questions from other parents and families, stay for our Q&A panel with our Collegewise staff. Ask any questions you’ve always wanted to ask an admissions office or counselor. SPEAKER BIOS: Arun PonnusamyBased in Los Angeles, California, Arun is widely regarded as one of the most knowledgeable college counselors and admissions experts in the United States. As an admissions officer, he evaluated the files of over 7,500 high school seniors and read approximately 20,000 college essays. Here's how it worked: he was an assistant director of admissions for five years at the University of Chicago (his alma mater). Arun then held the same post for two years at Caltech and spent another two reading for UCLA. That's nine application cycles for three highly selective colleges—experiences that have given Arun a level of deep expertise matched by few in the world. Since joining Collegewise in 2005, Arun has guided hundreds of students into their dream colleges through thoughtful one-on-one work. He also conducts professional development for high school teachers and counselors in addition to speaking at seminars that are attended by thousands of students and parents annually. In recent years, Arun has appeared in the pages of USA Today, the Washington Post, and the Chronicle of Higher Education as well as many television appearances. His love of frequent flyer miles is matched only by his love of Ohio State football, astronomy, and an invigorating hike to the top of a mountain. Leslie TamAs Senior College Counselor in our Singapore office, Leslie works with students throughout the region to prepare for their university applications to the United States, United Kingdom, and elsewhere. A graduate of Harvard and Georgetown Universities and originally from the United States, she has spent the past 14 years in Asia and speaks Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese. She has developed comprehensive college counseling programs in two new schools (The ISF Academy, Hong Kong and Stamford American International School, Singapore) and has experience with students studying all types of academic curricula (IBMYP, IBDP, AP, Singapore A-levels, IGCSE). She is passionate about helping students in Asia overcome the (wrong) stereotype of being “boring and flat,” and drawing out their best, not just for college applications but for life. Hani RahmanFrom her time at UC Davis as an admissions officer to her role at Yale-NUS College in admissions and financial aid, Hani has conducted student interviews, been on multiple admissions committees, and has read more than 5,000 applications and 8,500 essays. Prior to working at Yale-NUS, Hani served as a counselor at a private counseling company and as an admissions counselor at San Francisco State University. She also worked for many years within the University of California system, advising students and working with staff and faculty on course offerings across all nine UC undergraduate campuses. She brings her extensive knowledge of international admissions to her one-on-one counseling with each family while also sharing her experience throughout Singapore by speaking at schools and conducting application workshops for US and UK students. To maintain a high level of knowledge of the admissions landscape, Hani regularly attends international admissions conferences and has completed the Harvard Summer Institute on College Admissions. In addition to her master’s degree in Higher Education Leadership and Policy from California State University Sacramento, Hani holds a bachelor’s in Biological Sciences from UC Davis. In her free time, she loves to explore the natural, tropical spaces of Singapore by spotting and identifying cool bugs, birds, and animals.
