      SFF 2019: Public Science Awareness

The Public Science Awareness talks, held as part of the SkillsFuture Festival (SFF) 2019* [], is an interactive seminar series designed to introduce basic ideas of science and technology to the layman in a friendly, non-threatening setting.  Held over three talks, participants can expect to be acquainted with scientific and critical thinking they can apply in daily life.  Speakers will distil difficult or dry concepts in scientific discovery, science in modern life, the scientific method of inquiry and ethics. Participants will get to learn about mental models and applications in the real world, and defend against "fake science news" when confronted with scams, pseudoscience or superstition. The first talk (13 July), Health and Mathematics, introduces simple mathematical and reasoning skills to make sense of statistics and health recommendations. Jan Chan (a mathematics and computer science graduate) will explain concepts such as probabilities, false negative and false positive, double blind experiments, antibiotics and vaccinations, pollution, pseudoscience and scams.  [Venue: Lifelong Learning Institute, Rm TR1-1] The second talk (20 July), Technology and Society, is about understanding the basics of how modern technology works and how it interacts with society. Jan Chan (technology consultant at Accenture) will explain concepts such as electronics, information and data, computer networks and the Internet, Artificial Intelligence, space travel, history of scientific discoveries and their effects on the world.  [Venue: Lifelong Learning Institute, Rm TR1-2] The third talk (3 August), DNA to Genetic Testing, focuses upon DNA advancements, molecular tests, stem cells gene therapy, and direct-to-consumer genetics tests. Rick Lim, an expert in the genomics/genetics field, with years of technical and commercial experience, will explain its scientific basis, applications and impact on ethics and society. It will be an interactive session to help the layman understand the repercussions of scientific developments in the field.  [Venue: Lifelong Learning Institute, Rm TR9-1] *A project supported by the LearnSG Seed Fund.
